The house is clean and quiet.  The whelping box and pen have been taken down and put away.  Our dining room has actually become a room for dining, once again, instead of Puppy Central. 

Our last puppy left us this afternoon.  I have much more time on my hands now, but I must admit that I miss the pups a little.  But then I remember that I already have THREE dogs and a child to keep me busy, and I just chalk up my feelings to being a crazy dog lover.

It has been great to hear from some of the families already with updates on their new babies.  I love hearing how they are doing and seeing pictures, so keep ‘em coming! 

Good luck to everyone, and please feel free to email me with any photos or comments that you would like for me to add to this website.  I hope we all stay in touch and (selfishly) I hope I get to see your pups grow up, even if it’s just through pictures.

I couldn’t resist posting some new photos of the pups.  I just bought a new camera and the pics are turning out great, so I thought I’d share them!  These were taken last night during one of their romps in the family room.

And I couldn’t resist posting this pretty picture of Sophie.  She’s been such a great mommy!

Only a few more days until the pups leave and settle into their new homes!  I’ll warn you now… they are friendly, frisky, mischievous, and demand your attention!  You’ll have your hands full, but they are so sweet and cute that it won’t even matter when they chew your favorite pair of shoes. HA!

The puppies are getting so big now!  Despite the recent chilly weather, we have moved into a very important phase in their training and learning… one that the pups’ new families will appreciate… learning to go to the bathroom outside!

Getting seven pups outside and keeping an eye on everyone isn’t easy, especially when I am alone!   The puppies are remarkably responsive, though.  If they start to wander too far, all I have to do is clap my hands and call “here, puppy, puppy, puppy!” in an excited, high-pitched voice.  They immediately come running, bounding joyfully across the grass.

The pups LOVE to be outside.  The sniff the grass, pull on the flowers that are still clinging to life despite the weather, and roll around playfully. 

The best part?  They go potty outside so well already!  Within seconds of putting them down on the grass, I say, “go potty” and they are doing their business right away!  It’s already becoming habit for them, and if I take them outside to go, they will come in and play in our kitchen/family room area without a SINGLE accident!  Pretty remarkable, but it just goes to show how important it is to take them out frequently for potty breaks.  If you take your pup outside often, it will establish that OUTSIDE is the place to “go” and you will see few accidents.  Now, if you forget to take the pup out, you’ll have plenty of accidents inside, because they will just stop and go if necessary.  But if you make the effort to take the pup out immediately 1. after it wakes up,  2. right before playtime and 3. right after eating  you will see great strides made in housebreaking! It’s my hope that all of the trips I am taking outside with them now will help you in housebreaking and establishing that important routine.  (It’s also very nice for me to have them go OUTSIDE, rather than me clean up a stinky play pen/sleeping box!)

I can’t believe the pups are nearly ready to go home!  Just one week to go…. I bet you are getting so excited!  We will miss them, but they are all so hungry for love and attention now that I always feel like they need more one-on-one time!  It’s hard to do that with seven of them clamoring for your time. It will be great for them to move into their new environments with lots of love showered upon them.  They’re lucky puppies!

For those who had hoped to get a puppy from this litter and might be disappointed, please contact me and let me know if you might be interested in a pup from a future litter.  I will be sure to let you know when we are “expecting” again!  It won’t be for at least a year, since we like to give Sophie plenty of puppy-free time to relax and enjoy life without a bunch of hungry babies to care for!

In the meantime, the pups keep growing and growing!  We are dealing with weaning right now.  Sophie is such a good mommy and isn’t forcing the pups to stop nursing.  I think she would just take care of them for many more weeks if she had to!  So, now that they are nearly 6 weeks old and are heading home in two weeks, I am separating Sophie from the litter and decreasing the nursing time.  Right now they get to nurse twice a day, and they are eating regular puppy chow frequently.  My goal is to cut out the nursing completely within the next week.

Now that they are getting bigger, I am planning to update each pup’s “online profile.”  Think of it like online dating! 

“Hi, I’m Forest, the Green Boy.  I like mushy puppy chow, milk before bed, and long walks in my playpen.  I am a calm and laid back guy, but I love to snuggle and play, too!  I’m looking for someone to take me home and give me a happy life filled with fun and love!”

Tonight you’re all getting a closer look at Forest!  He’s one of our three boys and one of my personal favorites!

These pups are just a joy to be around!  Sure, cleaning up after SEVEN of them and feeding them is a lot (A LOT!) of work.  But there is just something precious about a fuzzy, charming puppy.  They frolic, bounce, and bark.  They jump up when a human is nearby, begging for attention.  They’re already so sweet and affectionate, and every day they seem to grow a little more!

Some of our little adventurers have figured out how to climb out of the whelping box, so we have created their new setup.  They now have a vinyl floor outside the whelping box, with a spacious play area in a large exercise pen.  Mostly, they sleep in the whelping box, and come out to play and eat in the x-pen.  I’m proud to say that we are making some great potty-training progress!  I only put paper down in one corner of the x-pen, and most times, the pups go over to that corner to potty on the paper!  They’re already learning that they should “go” only in certain spots.

Now that they are bigger, the pups are getting attention and playtime from my son, Aiden, every day.  Aiden has been raised around animals and is remarkably gentle, despite his age (16 months).  Of course, he is always supervised with the puppies.  The pups already adore him and have quickly learned that little kids are the best playmates!  It’s a great aspect of our socialization process, which allows the puppies to develop a great relationship with children.

So, I’ve decided to stick with the color themed names.  Seems like most of you who commented or emailed me were split down the middle.  The deciding factor was that I’ve already been calling the babies by their color names, so it was already a habit for me.  I should mention that once you have met and officially selected your puppy, I will start to call it by your chosen name, should you make a decision on that matter.  Or you might be like me, making long lists of names and being so indecisive that you bring your pup home, calling her “Molly?  No, Lily?  How about Annie?”  Or maybe that’s just me, treating doggie names as important as human baby names!

Anyway, that bit of business aside, the puppies reached an important milestone today.  They had their first taste of real dog food!  I noticed that a few times when I fed Sophie in the whelping box, they were sniffing and even licking at her bowl.  Given that they are getting so big and there are so many of them, I figured the time was right to introduce them to the wonders of puppy chow and give them some extra nutrition! 

I made a pan of puppy “baby food” by pouring the puppy chow in a shallow pan, covering it with hot water, then mashing it once the food softened.  I added a few tablespoons of canned “wet” puppy food to entice them, then sat each pup along the lip of the pan.  You have to show them that the food is tasty, so I dipped each little nose into the food.  They react by licking their lips and noses… and HEY!  This stuff tastes GOOD!

It took them a little time to get the hang of it, but soon they were diving into the pan, and were COVERED in the stuff.  This was fine, since there was always a brother or sister nearby to lick food off their ears or tails.

Mmm, tasty.

Though they will still keep nursing until Sophie decides to fully wean them (normally around 5 or 6 weeks of age) they will now be getting puppy food a few times a day.  Based on today, I think we have some healthy eaters!

After their meal, I had to literally TOWEL them off… they were covered in mushy puppy chow!  I dedided to do a quick photo shoot/profile of each pup, so you can check them out one by one.  Please excuse any food that might be clinging to a paw or nose! 

So, meet the puppies!!!

Let’s start with FOREST (Green Boy):

Forest (Green Boy)

Forest has these adorable curly ears… so darn cute!  Well really, all of Forest is cute.  He’s a friendly, happy guy.  Lots of times I’ll see Forest wagging his little tail in the whelping box, just saying “hello” to his brothers and sisters.  He is very sweet with my son, letting him kiss him on the head more times than I can count.  He’s already trying to climb out of the whelping box when he sees me nearby… already man’s best friend!  Forest is a medium blonde color, similar to Sophie.

Say Hello, MERLOT (Red Boy):

Merlot  (Red Boy)

Oh, Merlot.  This pup is SUCH a love.  There’s just something about him that I adore.  He’s always one of the first to jump up and run to me when I come to the whelping box to play.  He already gives kisses and is so very affectionate.  Merlot is one of the pups that started eating like a horse today… he didn’t need much time to figure out how good it was!  Merlot has a beautiful “blocky head” which means that he strongly resembles his Momma Sophie in his head shape.  As an adult, he will likely have a beautiful face and expression much like his mom.  He is a medium blonde color, similar to Sophie.

Next up… OLIVE (Green Girl):

Olive (Green Girl)

Little Olive is the smallest pup in the litter.  She started out as a full-fledged runt, which meant I gave her special attention to make sure she ate enough.  But Olive has proven herself to be a spunky and feisty girl!  She jumps right in to nurse and doesn’t let a bigger sibling push her around!  Olive is very easy-going and sweet.  She is noticeably darker than most of her brothers and sisters.  She’ll likely be more of an Apricot color, similar to her father.

Next up, SCARLETT (Red Girl)!

Well, fiddle dee dee, Miss Scarlett! (Any Gone with the Wind fans out there?)  Scarlett is gorgeous.  She’s a sturdy, stocky puppy, which means she will have a nice bone structure as an adult, similar to Sophie.  She also strongly resembles Sophie in the face/expression.  Scarlett is very responsive to my voice already, and can usually be found instigating some playtime with her siblings.  A very playful one!  She is one of my favorite girls… adorable and loves people already!  Scarlett is medium blonde in color.

Say hello to…  SKYE (Blue Girl):

Skye definitely stands out from her brothers and sisters!  Why?  Because she is the darkest puppy in the litter.  Her coat is beautiful, and she has the fuzziest little nose!  Just look at it!  Begging to be kissed, no?  Skye is a leader of the pack.  She’s often one of the first puppies to wake up, first to start playing, first to whine for Sophie to come back and nurse.  She’s confident and curious… just the way you want a puppy to be!  If you are looking for unique, she’s your girl!

Here’s SIENNA (Orange Girl):

Sienna (Orange Girl)

Sienna is a sweet and laid-back puppy.  You’ll often find her at the center of the puppy pile, fast asleep.  Today, she was the last to jump in on the food.  She decided to nap for a while while everyone else fought for the puppy chow… then she had the pan all to herself!  Sienna likes to snooze, and will curl up on your chest to snuggle.  She reminds me of Sophie with her gentle, relaxed attitude.  Not to mention how cute she is… with that black shiny nose and fuzzy muzzle.  She’s going to be a gorgeous adult dog, and I think she’ll be a lovely family pet. 

And last but not least, DENIM (Blue Boy):

Denim is my playful little charmer.  He runs to greet you and manages quite well on his wobbly little legs!  He’s even let out a yip of delight when he sees me!  Too cute.  You can alway count on Denim to be one of the first pups to wiggle into your lap when you sit in the whelping box.  He’s a great eater and thoroughly enjoyed his first taste of puppy chow today.  He’s also a medium blonde color, and looks like he will have a lovely Doodle coat.

PLEASE NOTE!  I have received some deposits on puppies, but no one has been matched with a particular puppy yet.  Puppies will be matched based on buyer preference and my input, as determined by your family dynamic and the pup’s personality.

I should also mention… people often ask me if there is any difference between males and females as family pets.  Honestly, I see very little difference between them.  But every dog’s personality is different, and I have had both males and females over the years.  I love both equally!  It seems some people prefer females, but a neutered male is just as laid-back, and sometimes even more affectionate than a female.  Don’t let the gender of a puppy sway you… as long as you spay or neuter around 6 months of age, you will not have issues with marking in the house, or difficulty handling your dog!  Males are not usually stronger or harder to train, and are eager to please their masters.  Same goes for the girls!

Ready to go to their forever homes in early November (approx. 11/8/08)

Okay, everyone!  I need your vote on a very important issue:  what to call the puppies.  I have “color coded” each puppy with a little nail polish on their rear toenails, to help tell them apart and track their growth.  I also like to call them by a name while they are with us (this doesn’t have any impact on their responding to their new names once they go home to their new families). 

Originally, I had planned to call them a name that fit with their nail color (think “Denim” for the blue boy, “Scarlet” for the red girl, “Forest” for the green boy, etc. etc.)

But last night I had a fun idea.  We have 3 boys and 4 girls.  What if we named them:

• Obama
• McCain
• Biden
• Sarah (Palin)
• Michelle (Obama)
• Cindy (McCain)
• Hillary (Clinton… ’cause I’d need a 4th girl name and she came pretty close!)

Whaddya think?  Should we go political or stick to the color scheme for these pups?  Just think… you could tell everyone that you just bought a bitch named Hillary…. okay that’s funny, but sort of mean, huh?  Or, “time to neuter John McCain!”  Or that Sarah Palin…  She’s just a Goldendoodle with lipstick! I finally got around to posting some video of the pups! They’re three weeks old today. Please excuse the video quality, though.  We have a HD camcorder that takes clear, vibrant video, but sites like Youtube don’t upload High Def vids correctly, so I just used the video function on my point-and-shoot camera.  They’re still cute as can be, despite the grainy quality of the camera.

We took this video last night, right as they were starting to wake up from a nap.  Enjoy!
